Add VAT to a figure, or take it back out of one

calendar_today Last updated: August 22, 2026

The tax inside a 115-riyal receipt is 15, not 15% of 115 — taking it out divides by 1.15 rather than multiplying. Exactly one figure is rounded and the third is derived, so the line always adds up. Calculated in your browser.

Sahel's VAT calculator adds the tax to a figure or extracts it from a tax-inclusive one, at 15% for Saudi Arabia, 5% for the UAE and Oman, 10% for Bahrain, 14% for Egypt and 16% for Jordan, showing net, tax and gross as figures that reconcile — fit for an invoice line, and worked out in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT rate in Saudi Arabia? expand_more
The standard rate is 15%. It varies across the region: 5% in the UAE and Oman, 10% in Bahrain, 14% in Egypt and 16% in Jordan, while Kuwait and Qatar have not introduced it. Zero-rated and exempt goods exist in all of them; this calculator works with the standard rate.
How do I take VAT out of a total? expand_more
Divide the total by 1.15 to get the figure before tax; the difference is the tax. This is where the common mistake lives: the tax inside a 115-riyal receipt is 15, not 17.25, because 15% of 115 is not the tax that was charged inside it.
How do I add VAT to a figure? expand_more
Multiply by 0.15 for the tax and add it, or multiply by 1.15 for the total directly. Choose "Add VAT" in the tool and enter the amount before tax.
Why do invoice figures sometimes disagree by a halala? expand_more
Because rounding each of the three figures on its own lets net plus tax differ from the total. This tool rounds exactly one of them and derives the third by subtraction, so the line reconciles exactly whatever the amount.
